Children of Tax and Tea is a full-color, heavily illustrated, humorous hardback book that captures the charmingly profane spirit of foul-mouthed Bostonians who enjoy discussing viking history at public drinking establishments. Basically, imagine a cast of inebriated Mark Wahlberg style movie characters illicitly recorded while unloading all sorts of informative and factual knowledge about the Viking Age on captive audiences. The pearls of Norse wisdom contained in those illuminating barroom discourses form the basis of the book.

ABOUT OUR GUESTS

Rowdy Geirsson is the author of The Scandinavian Aggressors, translator of The Impudent Edda, and author of Children of Tax and Tea. He is a regular contributor to Scandinavian Review and his writing has also appeared in the Sons of Norway's Viking Magazine, Medieval World: Culture and Conflict, and McSweeney's Internet Tendency. In 2025 he became the first American to be interviewed by Amon Amarth's Johan Hegg on the popular Swedish podcast, Grimfrost.

Matt Smith is an illustrator based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is the creator of the Icelandic saga-inspired graphic novel, Barbarian Lord. He is also the illustrator of Dark Horse's Hellboy: The Bones of Giants, Image Comics' Lake of Fire, and BOOM! Studios' Folklords.
